Oncologist's Role:

Different oncologists offer their specialized services for cancer therapy depending on the nature, stage, and location of cancer. Oncology is divided into three categories: medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. There are other sub-specialties as well.

• Oncologist (Medical)

A medical oncologist is a clinician who uses chemotherapy and other drugs to treat cancer, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. He is a cancer patient's primary health care provider, and he is in charge of the patient's treatment. 

For the most outstanding results, he collaborates with the other medical departments. A medical oncologist is also the person in charge of the patients' post-treatment follow-ups and examinations.

• An oncologist who specializes in surgery

A surgeon who specializes in the surgical excision of malignant tumors is known as a surgical oncologist. They are essentially general surgeons who specialize in oncology and related surgical procedures. They're also trained to do particular sorts of biopsies to aid in the diagnosis of malignancy.

• An oncologist who specializes in radiation therapy

Radiation oncologists are doctors who use radiation treatment to treat cancer. High-energy X-rays are used in radiation therapy to eliminate malignant cells.

When it is impossible to eradicate cancer cells, physicians employ radiation to shrink the tumor or delay its growth without harming the surrounding tissues. 

Palliative care is the term for this type of treatment. The therapy's primary goal is to improve the patient's quality of life by reducing tumor growth and associated symptoms.

Radiation oncologists may use brachytherapy to treat cancer patients on occasion. Radioactive sources are inserted directly into or close to the tumor in this treatment. The radioactive radiation sources may be left in place permanently or removed at the end of each treatment session, depending on the type of cancer.

Subspecialties in other fields

• Oncologist specializing in gynecology

Oncologists that specialize in tumors of the female reproductive system are known as gynecologic oncologists. Ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, and other cancers are among them. They are obstetrician-gynecologists who have completed additional fellowship training in cancer.

• Oncologist for children and adolescents

A pediatric oncologist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of cancer in children. Brain tumors, leukemia, osteosarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma are among the diseases that primarily affect children and early teenagers.

• Hematologist-Oncologist

Hematologist oncologists specialize in detecting and treating blood malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

• Neuro-Oncologist

Neuro-oncologists specialize in treating malignancies of the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves.

Costs and duration of stay in Egypt for oncology treatment:

The average price of treatment for each patient at 33158 Egyptian Pounds (LE). Compared to patients who relapsed and died, it was higher for those who attained CR. 

Drugs accounted for 78 percent of the overall treatment cost, with hospitalization, investigations, and blood component therapy accounting for 6%, 7%, and 8%, respectively.

Oncology treatments might take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. One course is usually made up of multiple on-and-off cycles. A typical process lasts 2 to 6 weeks. There are several treatment sessions within each cycle.
